Rock Hill, SC – Students at Legion Collegiate Academy will break out their best sneakers this week to raise money for the local Heart2Heart Foundation. LCA’s National Honor Society group is sponsoring the event.

February is American Heart Month and, as a fundraiser for the Heart2Heart Foundation, proceeds from the Charity Sneaker Ball will go to help inspire and enable women and their loved ones to take action that prevents heart attack, stroke and premature death.

The Heart2Heart Foundation specifically works to raise awareness, action and advocacy around heart disease in South Carolina and is based in Rock Hill.

The Charity Sneaker Ball at Legion Collegiate Academy is scheduled for Friday, Feb. 10, from 7:30 until 9:30 p.m. in the Academy’s Student Union. Tickets for the event ate $20 per person. The attire for the ball is semi-formal, but make sure to wear your favorite sneakers. A guest DJ has been secured for the event.

Legion students who have been responsible for organizing the events around Heart Month include Casmyn Wilmore, the Committee Chair; Nadia Burns, National Honor Society president, Briana Vinson, vice-president of the National Honor Society and Teryn Johnson, NHS treasurer, along with committee members Raeghan Massey and Brianna Cook.

“We were trying to figure out something to do for Heart Month that wasn’t necessarily associated with Valentine’s Day,” Wilmore said. “Last year we just sold candy in support of heart month, but we wanted to do more. Our goal is to get more of the school involved by holding an event to celebrate heart awareness.”

Proceeds from the sale of tickets to the event will be donated to the Heart2Heart Foundation.

“We are also holding a secondary fundraiser called Change of Heart,” Massey said. “Each teacher has a donation jar on their desk to collect spare change or whatever our students can donate with all of the proceeds going to the charity.”

While the group did not set a specific dollar amount goal for the event this year, since it is their first attempt, they do have a goal of attracting at least 100 students to the dance. To make sure students are aware of the event, flyers were posted all over the campus and the schools’ social media channels have been used to spread the word.

“This is the debut for the National Honor Society to hold an event like this at the school,” Burns said. “Other groups have held dances in the past and done well.

“We hope all the students will get excited for this dance because it is a Sneaker Ball. You don’t have to get all dressed up, just wear your sneakers and come to have a good time.”

Tickets to the event can be purchased through the Hometown Fan App or by contacting any member of the committee.

The Legion Collegiate Academy National Honor Society chapter is led by school Guidance Counselor Genetta Vinson.
